2024 HOH 5k Recap

2024 Race Recap

As the world watched on as the most elite athletes competed in the Paris Olympics, we celebrated the Olympic spirit with just as much excitement and camaraderie in our very own backyard.

The Olympic spirit was alive and well, with the Olympics streaming throughout the race and our very own Flash the Flamingo proudly carrying the Olympic torch, alongside long-time race supporter, Jan Dozeman. A special shoutout to Lucas, who, donning his flamingo blazer, had the honor of extinguishing the Olympic flame during our closing ceremonies after winning the cauldron itself in our raffle.

The addition of a giant pink race arch and perfect weather (mid-70s with a light breeze) made for some fantastic photo finishes. Be sure to check out our race photos at the link below.

We were blown away by the record number of runners, walkers, and volunteers who joined us, including over 20 volunteers from Holland Heights Church who collectively made over 700 cookies for the event. Paired with 575 cups of blueberries, 466 pulled pork sandwiches from Earl's Meats, Biggby iced coffee, and ice cream from the Holland Police Department’s Polar Patrol, we were all well-nourished and caffeinated for an evening of fun and camaraderie.

The rivalry between Holland Heights Church and Calvary on 8th continues to bring the drama. This year, Holland Heights Church took home the highly coveted “Most Participants” trophy, winning by just five people! However, Calvary Church didn’t go home empty-handed—they claimed the title of “Fastest Team” with some truly impressive finishes.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers (over 150!), including our Road Warriors who lined the route to cheer on participants and ensure no one got lost. From creative signs and music, to bubbles, costumes, and blow horns, the energy was electric. We were especially impressed by Ralph and Julie Beidler and Kent VanRaalte, who won Flash’s Road Warrior trophy with their bald eagle, giant American flag, and a whole lineup of flamingos in costumes with witty signs.

Flash the Flamingo is so grateful for all who helped make his hometown Olympics dreams come true. He's now enjoying some well deserved R&R in his favorite spot - the basement at Calvary on 8th, where he's been catching up on his favorite shows, responding to his fan mail, and maybe even planning his next big race!
