Once again we had a great turn-out for our annual neighborhood clean-up! A big thanks to everyone who participated! This year we had four dumpsters available for large trash items and they were all filled by the end of the weekend. Flowers were available for planting and they went quickly! Residents are encourages to participate in "The Pot Project" where the best kept flowers will win a prize a the end of the summer.

School's out, the temperature is rising and summer is here! You know what that means? Hoops on Abbey Court has begun! Every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7-9 pm basketball hoops are set up for some 2-on-2, PIG, HORSE, some good natured rivalry or just a good game. Tuesday night is for men only, so all you men out there get ready for some hard-core ball. Thursday nights is for families and children. This is a great way to get outside, get some exercise and get to know your neighbors. Heights of Hope looks forward to seeing you out there!
Heights of Hope has begun a summer tutoring program for children in the neighborhood. We meet from 10 to 11 on Tuesdays and Thursdays to read, do some math and maybe play a game together. It's fun and both students and tutors are learning!
Classes are being formed for people interested in learning English or Spanish as a second language. If you are interested, please contact Heights of Hope at heightsofhope@yahoo.com. Classes are free!

THE COMMUNITY CENTER
One of the biggest challenges Heights of Hope faces is a lack of available indoor space in our neighborhood. For the past two years, neighbors have been cramming together for community gatherings in already crowded apartments. For the past several years, the neighbors have been dreaming, along with Heights of Hope, about the possibility of a community center and we are pleased to announce the beginning of a dream come true! Heights of Hope has just signed a one year lease for a vacant apartment on Stratford Way and is in the process of furnishing it and then putting it to use! It's a small step, but definitely a positive one!
The Poverty Simulation is a tool used by Heights of Hope to educate people about the realities of living in poverty. It is a two hour simulation for a group of 15 or more. Our staff would love to bring the simulation to your workplace, church or group at any time, so please contact us if you're interested.
Heights of Hope presented it's first ever NEIGHBOR OF THE YEAR award to Denise Jordan and Wasana Davis for their commitment to the neighborhood by completing the Neighborhood Leadership Academy and for being active and caring citizens in our community.
If you have a neighbor in Holland Heights that you would like to nominate for the 2009 Neighbor of the Year, please email us at heightsofhope@yahoo.com
